Andy is the former President of the Appalachian Mountain Club, a position he held for 23 years. His priorities included a focus on management, membership growth and bringing conservation, including extensive land protection, into all facets of the organization. AMC’s Maine Woods Initiative, which now includes over 120,000 acres, just south of Katahdin, was launched during his time at AMC, but Andy claims his colleague, Walter Graff deserves most of the credit.

After his so-called retirement, Andy volunteered at the Conservation Law Foundation for several years helping them transition to a well-managed, fiscally sound and overall successful organization. He worked with Doug Foy as another volunteer, as well as senior staff Peter Shelley and Sean Mahoney. Andy states that with partners like that, it’s hard not to succeed. He continues to serve as Treasurer of the Board, and says he is fortunate to have a super star partner as CFO who does all the work.

Andy previously served on the Board of the town of Lincoln’s land trust and now is a member of the Board of Mass Audubon, serving on their Executive Committee and Nominating Committee and on the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Board of Advisors. In contrast to his “mountain oriented” profession, he grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana, attended University of Michigan and finally moved east to gain an MBA at Harvard.
