Multiple Open Steward Positions across Massachusetts
The Trustees of Reservations Needs a Few Good Property Stewards!
The Trustees is one of Massachusetts’ largest non-profits and the nation’s first conservation and preservation organization. We manage, protect and share 124 irreplaceable, natural and historic properties across New England, including Castle Hill and the Crane Estate, World’s End and the deCordova Sculpture Park & Museum, to name but a few.
The Steward is a member of the team responsible for the year-round upkeep and maintenance of their assigned property. The Steward provides leadership to seasonal staff and volunteers as needed. This position is primarily field based with some administrative tasks.
In this role, you will:
Perform routine landscape maintenance including but not limited to lawn mowing, string trimming, bed edging, mulching, trash pickup, raking, tree care, hedge trimming, field mowing etc.
Perform routine maintenance of all structures including custodial, painting, light carpentry, and plumbing
Assist the Stewardship Manager and other team members in larger landscape and building projects
Safely and efficiently operate equipment including mowers, small tractors, UTVs, and trucks
Operate, repair and maintain vehicles, machinery, tools and equipment to the highest standards
Maintain positive and productive relationships with our neighbors, visitors, town officials, businesses, and Trustees staff from other divisions and regions
Ensure positive visitor experience and safety, as the primary public-facing presence on these properties
Perform daily cleaning and restocking of restrooms
Perform weekly cleaning of public buildings
Provide cheerful and positive oversight and recognition of volunteer, intern, and seasonal employee efforts in the field
Assist in the set-up and dismantling of events and related materials
Participate in weekly meetings to cooperatively plan work with other members of the property team
Other duties/projects as assigned
The ideal candidate will have:
1-3 years of professional experience in property maintenance, landscaping, trail work, facilities management, or other experience that is relevant to this position
Experience in landscape maintenance with an eye for quality outcomes and attention to detail
Experience using, maintaining and repairing hand and power tools including string trimmers, brush saws, chainsaws, blowers and more.
Basic carpentry and painting skills, formal landscape management, trails maintenance, and related experience preferred
Experience managing cultural/historic landscapes and maintaining structures and building systems a plus
The ability to work independently and unsupervised as well as work cooperatively and demonstrate leadership in groups as well as the ability to work with a diverse group of people
Excellent interpersonal skills; comfortable and competent speaking to the public
Ability to complete assigned tasks and projects, meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks
Basic computer skills and ability to keep good records, familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite
A positive attitude, willingness to be flexible, and a strong commitment to the mission and achieving the goals of The Trustees
Willingness to learn new skills and flexibility to meet the day to day demands of the job is a must
Associate’s degree in Horticulture, Park Management, Forestry, ecology, or another natural resource field a plus
Valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record as outlined in The Trustees' driving policy
Satisfactory criminal background check (CORI)
Massachusetts Hoisting License - 2A (preferred) or willingness to obtain
Massachusetts Commercial Pesticide Applicator License (preferred) or willingness to obtain
OSHA 10 Hour General Industry (preferred) or willingness to obtain
Wilderness First Aid (preferred) or willingness to obtain
Able to routinely lift 50 pounds
Be willing to work outdoors, sometimes during inclement weather
Willing to work nights and weekends as needed
