Position Overview: Solstice Initiative is an innovative nonprofit working to democratize clean energy. Our mission is to empower traditionally-excluded communities towards a just and inclusive clean energy transition through accessible and affordable community solar projects, research and innovation, and state-based policy solutions. We work with local stakeholders and organizers to facilitate conversations around solar energy and plan projects that will bring increased workforce development opportunities, environmental health benefits, and wealth-building opportunities to local low-income residents.

We are looking for a Development Associate to help support our fundraising work. The Development Associate plays a key role on the development team supporting our grant research and writing, fundraising communications, and database administration. The right candidate is passionate about environmental justice and social equity, has strong writing and communication skills, and a proven ability to be a self-starter.

The Development Associate will be tasked with researching potential supporters, writing grants and fundraising appeals to donors, and database administration, reporting to the Director of Development with all aspects related to advancing our mission through fundraising. This is a full-time (40 hour/week) position that is fully-remote.


Grant writing
Originate and lead the writing of high-quality grant proposals and grant reports, including project narratives, budgets and other supporting documentation, in a timely manner to meet grant deadlines.
Develop a deep understanding of program content to ensure integrity and quality of proposal writing.
Identify new opportunities for private and public funding that align with Solstice Initiative’s programs and mission, including outreach and relationship building with prospective foundations and potential new funders as well as assist in maintaining solid relationships with existing funders.
Manage Solstice’s grant program using timely and appropriate internal and external communications (checklists, reminder messages, and proactive problem-solving) to ensure high-quality grants and reports are submitted on time.

Fund development
Administer database (Salesforce) by maintaining accurate records on individual donors, contributions, and any related financial files or meeting notes.
Provide support to the leadership team and key staff for meetings with donors including the creation of funder profiles and talking points.
Support fundraising events by maintaining guest lists, preparing registration materials, coordinating logistics, ensuring all donors are properly acknowledged in a timely fashion, and other duties as assigned.
Conduct research and outreach to identify new supporters.
Support Director of Development’s coordination with Board Members around their giving capacity (both personal and network)

Draft and manage all fundraising content including email appeals and newsletters.
Work with Program Team to develop collateral materials showing progress of Solstice programs for donor updates and ongoing communications


Strong writing skills with proven ability to write engaging content
Well organized to effectively meet project deadlines
Demonstrated ability to conduct thorough quantitative and qualitative research
Excellent communication skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Suite, Google Workspace
Quick learner with complex topics and technology
Extraordinary attention to detail
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Passionate about climate change and environmental and/or social justice
Willingness to work within equitable and inclusive frameworks and actively engage in ongoing learning about these frameworks within the mission of Solstice
Interest in collaborative work around team building and other projects that arise within the organization

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in nonprofit fundraising
Database management experience
Experience working in the clean energy or community development field
Experience working with communities traditionally excluded from the clean energy space (low-income, BIPoC, frontline communities)
